HORMONES, THE PITUITARY, PAGE 550, BERGERSEN.

The Pituitary is very important, it's effect in regulating the secretion of other hormones.
It is abiut the size of a pea.
The Pituitary and target glands have a negative feedback relationship.
The size of a pea located in the Sella turcia of the sphenoid bone. Consists of anterior lobe and posterior lobe, and smaller parts composed of secreting cells.
A tropic hormone from the pituitary stimulates the target gland to secret a hormone that inhibits further secretion of the tropic hormone by the pituitary.

When the serum concentration of the target gland hormone falls below a certain level, the Pituitary again secrets the tropic hormone until the target gland produces enough to inhibit the Pituitary secretion.

The Hypothalmic releasing factors, which cause the release or inhibition of the various hormones from the anterior Pituitary.
The action of extracts of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary Gland. How many hormones are secreted by the gland is unknown, but seven extracts, have been prepared in a relatively pure state, they have, definite specific action.

(1) Growth Factor influences development of body, promotes sketal, visceral, general growth of the body. giantism and dwarfism are connected with pathology of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary gland.
Growth hormone or Somatotropin has been obtained as a small crystalline protien, now its experimental, tends to increase the blood sugar and antagonize insulin.

(2) The Follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) The Ovarian follicle, brings a charateristic changes of ESTRUS MENSRATION in women. stimulates spermatogenesis in men.

(3) Luteinizing Hormone (LH) cause with others, ovulation and secretion of estrogen in females, In man, Spermatogenesis, androgen formation, growth of intersitial tissue.

(4) (TSH ) THYROTROPIC HORMONE, is necessary for normal development and function of the thyroid gland and in excess, known to produce Hyperthyroidism and increase the size of glands in lab animals.

(5) Lactogenic Factor , hormone produces the Corpus Luteum.

(6) THE ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC hormone (ACTH ) stimulates the cortex of the Adrenal gland.

(7) Melanocyte - Stimulating Hormone = Injected in men will darken the skin.
