Estrogen stimulates proliferation of stromal cells in the prostate gland that cause the urinary discomforts. A 2008 study documents specific mechanism by which estradiol causes rapid proliferation of prostate stromal cells. Researchers concluded these findings support the hypothesis that estrogen plays a role in the pathogensis of BPH, a disease charaterized predominantly by stromal overgrowth.
