ACETYCHOLINE

The Vagus nerve, which controls the stomach, intestine, bladder, and heart. The vagus nerve transmits it's influence to the various organs through the action of a chemical intermediary, or messenger. The messenger is a simple chemical substance called ACETYLCHOLINE. The solanaceous alkaloids work by blocking the action of acetylcholine and thus are classed as Anticholinergic drugs. Acetylcholine is a chemical messenger released by the cholinergic nerves, such as the vagus nerve.

HORMONES, THE PITUITARY, PAGE 550, BERGERSEN.

The Pituitary is very important, it's effect in regulating the secretion of other hormones.
It is abiut the size of a pea.
The Pituitary and target glands have a negative feedback relationship.
The size of a pea located in the Sella turcia of the sphenoid bone. Consists of anterior lobe and posterior lobe, and smaller parts composed of secreting cells.
A tropic hormone from the pituitary stimulates the target gland to secret a hormone that inhibits further secretion of the tropic hormone by the pituitary.

When the serum concentration of the target gland hormone falls below a certain level, the Pituitary again secrets the tropic hormone until the target gland produces enough to inhibit the Pituitary secretion.

The Hypothalmic releasing factors, which cause the release or inhibition of the various hormones from the anterior Pituitary.
The action of extracts of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary Gland. How many hormones are secreted by the gland is unknown, but seven extracts, have been prepared in a relatively pure state, they have, definite specific action.

(1) Growth Factor influences development of body, promotes sketal, visceral, general growth of the body. giantism and dwarfism are connected with pathology of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary gland.
Growth hormone or Somatotropin has been obtained as a small crystalline protien, now its experimental, tends to increase the blood sugar and antagonize insulin.

(2) The Follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) The Ovarian follicle, brings a charateristic changes of ESTRUS MENSRATION in women. stimulates spermatogenesis in men.

(3) Luteinizing Hormone (LH) cause with others, ovulation and secretion of estrogen in females, In man, Spermatogenesis, androgen formation, growth of intersitial tissue.

(4) (TSH ) THYROTROPIC HORMONE, is necessary for normal development and function of the thyroid gland and in excess, known to produce Hyperthyroidism and increase the size of glands in lab animals.

(5) Lactogenic Factor , hormone produces the Corpus Luteum.

(6) THE ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC hormone (ACTH ) stimulates the cortex of the Adrenal gland.

(7) Melanocyte - Stimulating Hormone = Injected in men will darken the skin.

ENDOCRINE HORMONES, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT.

The Actions of Hormones -------------
The Hormones are natural chemical substances, that act after being secreted into the bloodstream from the ductless or endocrine glands.
Hormones have physiologic interrelationships. Hormones from various endocrine glands work in concert to obtain physiologic control of vital processes, their relationship is synergistic or antagonistic this allows for flexibility and control. Six major areas hormones play a crucial regulatory role: _______________________________________

(1) Control and coordination of the secretory motor activites of the digestive tract.

(2) Control of ENERGY PRODUCTION

(3) Control of coposition and volume of extracellular fluid.

(4) Adaptation, acclimatization and Immunity.

(5) Growth and Development.

(6). Reproduction and Lactation in women.

To maintain the internal environment ther must be control of hormone secretion, a hormone produces a physiologic effect. Increased hormonal secretions may be evoked in response to stimuli from the external environment: cessation of external stimuli terminates the internal secretion response.
Hormones are not "used up" in exerting their physiologic effects but must be inactivated or excreted if the internal environment is to be in dynamic equilibrium.

Note that the hypothalmus , it functions, effects behavior patterns, regulates the basic life functions of man ( control of water excretion, appetite, sleep - wake mechanisms, temperature, and blood pressure, has its relationships with other parts of the nervous system and endocrine system.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

The Thymus = Linked with aging process located under breast bone, helps Lymph nodes produce T-CELLS, defend the body against attack. The Pituitary regulated by the hypothalmus Effects the Thymus.
The Thymus protects the Pituitary. Deterioation of these 3 Glands leads to aging. All are affected by the action of Insulin.
Insulin impotence caused by the lack of Chromium.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

The hypothalmus is the master gland, but the Pineal Gland controls it.
Pineal located at the base of the brain near the hypothalmus produces melatonin. Melatonin lets the hypothalmus know when it must read its secretions comensate for light / day & night cycles .
Age slows nerve transmissions from hypothalmus to the pineal, Pineal begins to shrink.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

HYPOTHALAMUS = A collection of cells in the brain both nerve cells and as an endocrine or hormone secreting, gland at the same time. Nerve cells communicate to other nerve cells, and endocrine glands communicate with various sites in the body by sending chemical messages thru the bloodstream.
The Hopothalmus is the link between the brain and the environment, both inside and outside the body. Anychange ocurring in the enviroment is detected by nerve cells then transmit the nature of change to the hypothalmus. Hypothalmus then evaluates the situtation and when necessary alerts the appropriate areas of the body. It regulates the body's hormones controls nerve function, such as tempture, hunger and blood pressure. The hypothalamus, the control center of the body, like a thermostate.
Simply put it is a area at the base of the brain that regulates bodily functions, such as body temperature, hunger and thirst.

ACETYLCHOLINE DEFINED AS -----------------------

Acetylcholine-- Is a chemical carrier of thought and memory, an excitatory neurotransmitter, essential for storage and recall of memory, responsible for concentration and focus, and plays significant role in muscular coordination. A deficit in this neurotransmitter is related to memory decline and reduced cognitive capacity.
Acetylcholine is not made from amino acids , its primary building block is choline.
The more choline you consume the more Acetylcholine you can produce.
Choline belongs to the B- family of vitamins, found in lecithin, and phosphatidyl choline.
Foods high in lecithin are , egg yolks, wheat germ, soybeans, organ meats, Acetylcholine declines In age.

HOW HORMONES WORK, ONE VIEW

A hormone will only act on a part of the body it fits, a hormone can be thought of as a "key", And its target site such as an organ, has specifically shaped "locks", on the cell wall, then the hormone will work, the endocrine glands get feedback from the body so they can adjust the hormone and keep them at the right levels.

COMMON CLASS OF DRUGS ACCELERATES MENTAL, PHYSICAL DECLINE IN ELDERLY.

Anticholinergic medications, which are commonly used for conditions like overactive bladder, motion sickness, and asthma, may hasten functional and cognitive decline in older adults, according to new research ( cited at bottom of this article) Anticholinergics selectively block receptors for acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter involved in motor function and memory. A study presented at the Academy of Neurology showed healthy older adults using anticholinergic medication experienced 1.5 times faster rate of Cognitive decline than subjects not using the medications. Medication used to treat bladder disorders were the most problematic.
A related presentation from the American Geriatric Society reported that older adults using anticholinergics demonstrated slower walking speed and were more likely to need help with daily living compared with people who did not take the drugs, Taking one moderately Anticholinergic Drug simulated an extra three to four years of age. (2)
This findings dovetail with a recent study showing that older adults who used medications for dementia and overactive bladder had a 50 % faster rate of functional decline compared with adults who only used medication for Dementia. (3).
While ANTICHOLINERGICS can be useful medicines, Physicians and patients should be aware that they can accelerate physical and cognition decline.

HOW TO PREDICT A STROKE

A physical exam is of minimal value strokes are caused by blocked blood vessels in the brain, (ischemic stroke) or by Ruptures in brains blood vessels ( hemorrhagic stroke ) symptoms are- sudden weakness or numbness to the face, arm, or leg usually on one side, loss of spech, trouble talking , or understanding speech , dimmnes or loss of vision ( especially in one eye ) unexplained dizziness , unsteadiness, frequent falls, or sudden severe headache.
High cholesterol is somewhat predicitive. An MRI tells you if someone is already having a stroke. The best predictor is a regular duplex carotid artery scanning and ankle brachial index,
tests up to 86% accuracy rate.

DOPAMINE, PARKINSONS

Dopamine, a substance used by cells to transmit impulses ( NEURO TRANSMITTERS).
Dopamine is one of 3 major Neurotransmitters known as CATECHOLAMINES, which the body respond to stress and prepare it for the flight-or -fight response. Insufficent dopamine disturbs, The balance between dopamine and other neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine.
Without dopamine, the nerve cells cannot properly transmit messages, and this results in the loss of muscle function and coordination, Parkinsons either tremor predominant, or postural instability and gait disturbed (pigd Walking Disorders".

BRAIN ATTACKS- STROKE

If the blood flow to your brain is interrupted you can suffer a brain attack also known as a stroke. When blood fails to reach an area of your brain, brain cells die rapidly and set off a chain reaction that kills other brain cells. A stroke is a emergency medical situtation and can permanently impair your speech, movement and memory.
Research scientists think they have discovered the " REAL CULPRIT " behind strokes and it is a Amino acid called HOMOCYSTEINE.

LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS LINKED WITH DEPRESSION

A new study shows for the first time that older people with low levels of Vitamin D and elevated
Levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH, a hormone that regulates blood calcium levels) are more likely to be depressed than those with normal levels.

In this study, Dutch researchers measured levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D and PTH in 1,282 paricipants aged 65 to 69, of whom 26 were suffering from major depression and 169 from minor depression. They found 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels to be 14% lower in depressed subjects (average:19 (ml) than non depressed subjects( average:22 ng/ml).
In both depressed and non-depressed participants, Vitamin D was far below optimal ranges of 50-60 Ng/ml of 25- hydroxyvitamin D of blood, indicative of how pervasive Vitamin D deficiencies have become. Serum PTH levels were 33% higher in those with major depression compared with their nondepressed counterparts. Higher PTH can be caused by inadequate Vitamin D status.

SLEEP PRESERVES MEMORY

Previously, studies have established that sleep enhances procedural memory, the process involved in consolidating procedural skills ( typing or playong the piano, for example ),
A new study by Jessica Payne, from the Beth Israel Deconess Medical Center ( Boston, Mass )
And colleagues now show that sleep is important in the development of episodic memories, paarticularly those of an emotional nature. The study involved 88 college students an found that the subjects who slept a full evening remembered the emotional scene they were shown in far greater detail than those participants who stayed awake for 12 hours after viewing the scene.

Comments the researchers : "Sleep is a smart sophisticated process, sleep is actually working at night to decide what memories to hold on to and what to let go of.
Dr. Klatz remarks: " In that to little sleep has been found to impair many of the body's biological
Processes, including the immune system, metabolic function, cognitive performance (specifically, learning and memory), And more, this study shows the key role of sleep in preerving memories of an episodic and emotional nature. The Restorative role of sleep is often underestimated and this study reminds us of the importance of this nightly process".

The FOUR DISTINCT TYPES OF MEMORY

The primary neurotransmitter responsible for memory function is acetylcholine.
There are four distinct types of memory, each ruled by one of the major neurotransmitters.

WORKING MEMORY----- Invloves the ability to absorb info or stimuli and retain it, bringing together old and current data, if the brain is overloaded with the latter, it will dump older memories. Working is affected by the frontal lobes and the biochemical Dopamine.

IMMEDIATE MEMORY----- Which lasts 30 seconds before the thought becomes long- term memory, consists of auditory and visual memory, an indication of one's learning capabilities and basic alertness. Immediate memory governed by the parietal lobe and the biochemical ACETYLCHOLINE.

VERBAL MEMORY ------ Necessary to produce and understand sound, words, sentences, stories, verbal memory controlled by the temporal lobes, and the biochemical GABA.

VISUAL MEMORY------ The ability to absorb and retain information such as faces, colors, shapes, designs, surroundings, pictures, and symbols. People who can drive to a location after being there only once, have exellent visual memory. Visual memory assisted by the occipital lobes and the biochemical Serotonin.

ACETYLCHOLINE DEFINED AS -----------------------

A neurotransmitter released by stimulation of the Vagus nerve, which alters heart muscle contractions, it induces movement of other muscels as well. Acetylcholine induces movement by the locomotion of an impulse across a nerve that causes it to release neurotransmitter molecules onto the surface of the next cell. This causes a stimulation of that next cell. After this process has been completed, the ACETYLCHOLINE is then broken into ACETATE and CHOLINE.
These travel back to the first cell to be recycled ino acetylcholine and start the process over again. ACETYLCHOLINE is critical for an adequately functioning memory.
Major research is now looking for treatments for memory deficits, like those found in ALZHEIMERS. Any mental health issue that involves memory or lack thereof, directlly or indirectly relates to ACETYCHOLINE.

CLINICAL RESEARCH into the supplemnt ACETYL- L- CARNITINE, IMPROVES ASPECTS OF COGNITION FUNCTION AND MEMORY. RESEARCHERS have found this nutrient is a

Niacin, Vitamin B-3

Niacin/ Nicotinic Acid) derived from Yeast, lean meat, defficient = Pellagro.
Niacin is cconverted in the body to Nicinamide. Pellagra a disturbance of the GI tract, skin and nervous system. In a milder form of deficiencey patients are nervous, irritable have indigestion, Diarrhea or constipation, and abnormal skin pigmentation.
Lean meats, poultry, fish are a good source of Niacin . Milk and Eggs are good sources of the precursor substance, tryptophan. Science can synthesize Niacin from the essential amino acid, tryptophan, diets low in both Niacin an d tryptophan are the most likely to produce clinical deficiency. All of the B-Complex must be used. Niacin lowers cholestrol and in psychiatric contexts to differentiate between psychoses of dietary an d non-dietary origin.
Side effects- flushing, GI upset, not to be used by those with peptic ulcers since nicotinic acid causes a release of histamine and stimulates hydrochloric acid secretion. Take with meals lowers side effects.

Vitamin D- deficiency linked to risk of death

More evidence that Vitamin D deficiency is linked to the risk of death.
Another study has found that low 25- hydroxyvitamin D levels (25) OH) D) seem to be linked to an increased risk of death, in a nationaly represenative cohort (1). Dr. Michael L. Melamed
(Albert Einsstien College of Medicine, Bronx,N.Y.) and his colleagues report their findings in the August 11/25 2008 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Melamed states this is one of the largest studies, 13,000 people, followed for an average of eight years, the first study to explore the association betweem vitamin- d levels and mortality in the overall population.

Hypoglycemia, Medline Plus article.

You have sugar in your blood. Your body needs glucose, a form of sugar to have enough energy. After you eat, your blood absorbs glucose. If you eat more than your body needs your muscles and liver store the extra. When your blood sugar begins to fall, a hormone tells your liver to release glucose, in most people, this rasies blood sugar. If it does not you have Hypoglycemia ,
And your blood sugar can be dangerously low. Signs include hunger, shkiness, dizzines confusion, difficulty speaking, feeling anxious or weak.
Hypoglycemia usally a side effect of diabetes medications. Eating or drinking something with carbohydrates can help.
You can have low blood sugar without diabetes--- Have DR, call lab to measure bloood glucose, insulin and other chemicals that play a part in the body's use of energy.

And discovered Pantothenic Acid thru his research.

Page 149, People do not get mental disease because they have undergone shock treatments or
Tranquilizers, It is because you have recived in your food enough of all the minerals, amino acids and vitamins the brain cells need to maintain them in reasonably good working order.
It's possible some cells and tissues in your body have not fared well in brain protection, if any nutritional factors are suboptimal in your brain mental disease can occur.
VITAMIN B3, PELLAGRA a lack thereof can cause MENTAL DEMENTIA.
Malnutrition is serious, vitamin B-3 is absoulutely needed for the metabolism of brain cells.

I Love Cateccholamines

Catecholamines- Dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, and serotonin are synthesized, stored, and metabolized in the brain. These substances do not easily penetrate the blood - brain barrier, but their precursors do.

Catecholamines, defined as--------------------------------

Catecholamine- Naturally occuring amine functioning as a neurotransmitter or hormone,
Including dopamine, noreinephrine, and epinephrine, all are derived from Tyrosine and have a
Catechol group with an attached amine group. Neurons in the brain, in the adrenal gland, some sympathetic nerve fibers produce different Catecholamines.
Catecholamines include adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine, with roles as hormones and as
Neurotransmitters.
