BONE HEALTH/ SUPPLEMENTS FOR BONE HEALTH

Bone Health defined as----
We cannot completely prevent this gradual loss of bone density, but we can retard it. The stronger our bone density inthe early years of life, the better we can withstand the onset of bone loss later in life. Men & Women must not wait until old age to start taking bone support supplements . Supplements play a role in preventing & treating osteoporosis. You mist not take calcium alone bone is not just calcium. Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Magnesium, Boron, Strontium, Silica, Zinc, & copper are essential nutrients, Soy isoflavones are beneficial. The Journal of Clinical Nutrition , study showed increased soy isoflavone consumption from diet or supplements for 6 months, boosts Bone mineral density in the spine by almost one gram in menopausal women. This was based on a meta-analysis of 10 randomised controlled trials.

BONE HEALTH/ SUPPLEMENTS FOR BONE HEALTH

Bone is living tissue. It contains both an organic protein matrix (30 percent) and various minerals (70) percent. Bone is in a constant state of flux. Cells known as Osteoblasts construct Bone Matrix and fill it with Calcium. At the same time, cells called Osteoclasts work just as busily to tear down and resorb the bone. This fine balance is regulated by many factors including systemic hormone and Cytokines. The bodys main concern is to maintain calcium narrow range, not to maintain bone mass. If calcium levels in the bone fall to low, the body will actually pull calcium from bone to fill the need. Bone mass reaches its peak by the middle of the third decade of life and plateaus for about 10 years. During this time bone turnover remains relatively constant, meaning bone formulation approximately equals bone resorption.
As our bodies age, this balance is lost. As the relative hormone levels shift in midlife-- more drastically in women than in men --- the Osteoclasts gain the upper hand, and bone mass begins dwindling. Bone is being lost by the time women reach menopause, the rate of loss increase by tenfold during the first six years after menopause.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis, the thinning & weakening of the bones which causes older people to lose height from shrinkage & even collapse of hte vertebrae, the dowagers hump in women. It is also a source of pain & disability in men. It mainly affects the spine where it causes back pain & disability in men. It mainly affets the spine, where it causes back pain & stiffness, especially in the neck, & the hips, where it contributes to osteoarthritic degeneration & sometimes fractures. It has been linked with low Testosterone levels in general and reduced free testosterone in particular.

PARATHYROID HORMONE IS DEFINED AS----------

Parathyroid hormone= Endocrine regulator of calcium & phosphorus , Parathyroid gland finds its major target, cells in bones & kidney./ .......... mobilization of calcium from the bone.
....... enhancing absorption of calcium from the small intestine -- facilitating calcium absorption from small intestine would clearly serve to elevate blood levels of calcium./ Parathyroid hormone stimulates this process, but indirectly by stimulating production of the active form of Vitamin D in the kidney. Vitamin D induces synthesis of a calcium binding protein in intestinal epithelial cells that facilitate efficient absorption of calcium into blood.

PLANTAR FASCITIS

This is a painful inflammatory condition caused by excessive wear to the plantar fascia of the foot, or biomechanical faults that cause abnormal pronation of the foot. The pain is felt on the underside of the heel, you fell it the most intense is the first steps of the day. Associated with long periods of weight bearing or sudden canges, obesity, weight gain, jobs that require a lot of walking on hard surfaces, shoes with little or no arch support, and inactivity are associated with Plantar Fascitis.

I will quote from the Peer- review journal cited above verbatim.

Abstract--- Normal consequences of aging men androgen levels, the neural consequences of age - related androgen depletion remain unclear, recent evidence suggests a link between low androgen levels & development of Alzheimers Disease ( A D ) the hypothesis that androgen acts as endogenous modulators of ( beta ) - amyloid protein ( A ) beta levels. These findings suggest that age - related androgen depletion may result in accumulation of A (beta ) in the male brain and therby act as a risk factor for the development of Alzheimers Disease.

MAGNESIUM THE MINERAL ESSENTIAL TO LIFE, AND TO THE HORMONAL BONE COMPLEX.

Magnesium is used in a pivotal role for more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body. This mineral plays a role in neutralizing acid from protein metabolism. First, it is nedded for proper functioning of Vitamin D, second PTH the Parathyroid hormone, and third for calcitonin, these are the three hormones that regulate bone metabolism and your mineral stores."

H-R-T- HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

HRT- HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY--- This therapy is used for hormone deficiencies , female menopause, Male - andropause, Osteoporosis, mood disorders, fatique, obesity, cognitive deficiencies. The key component of my therapies is the use of NATURAL BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES. These hormones are made from natural sources such as plants, and work by precisely duplicating the bodys original hormones. The bonding of a hormone to its recptor is determined by the shape of the hormone molecule, like a key fits a lock. Synthetic hormones not found in nature like Premarin differ in their molecular configurationn from Endogenous( made in our body) hormones, so they differ in their activity at the receptor level. They will not provide the same total activity as the hormones they are intended to replace. They provoke side effects not found with human hormone. Pharma companys prefer synthetic hormones which are patented while NATURAL BIO- IDENTICAL HORMONES are not .
Studys show women given synthetic Estrogen show 100 % risk of blood clots & stroke, 40% increase in heart attacks, 26 percent in breast cancer, compared to women in a control group who were give a placebo. Women who have been using natural , bioidentical Estrogen have not suffered these harmful effects. HORMONES MUST BE SUPERVISED BY A DOCTOR.

The above verbatim quote from the Edge Effect by Eric Braverman,MD.
Path-Medical Center NYC, Cabrini Hospital NYC.

HORMONES---- DEFINED AS/ HRT, HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Ninety percent of all hormones are produced in or regulated by the brain. They are the brains messengers, which are sent to all other parts of the body to control the specific functions of cells And organs. Hormone Replacement Therapy can effectively alter brain chemical processes although not as quickly as perscription medications.
As we age, our hormone producing organs and glands begin to wear out. Their output drops, and the corresponding parts of the body begin to break down. The brain has to work harder, it tries to compensate for diminished body functions. If the decline in hormones is not treated, or treated improperly, these biochemicals will be reduced further resulting in more serious conditions. Hormonal impact on brain function is indisputable. Research studies clinical applications with thousands of patients demonstrated the postive effect that hormones have on neur-transmitter deficiency conditions, such as diminished concetration, memory loss, nicotine cravings, and insomnia.

VITAMIN D SUNLIGHT & TANNING BEDS

Supplements and diet, and not sunlight, should be your source of Vitamin D, Dermatology experts have concluded. U.K. researchers proposed 10 to 15 minuets unprotected sun exposure as a good source of vitamin D. Other researchers differ. Studies have shown that sunshine levels in some northern countries are so weak during winter months that the body makes no vitamin Dat all, leading some to estimate half of the population have insufficent or deficient levels of the vitamin, prompting some to recommend tanning beds. Researchers commented on societys where life expectancey has doubled & 30 % of caucasians will develop skin cancer. " Fortunately, there is a non-carcinogenic alternative -- intestinal absorption of vitamin D, fortified foods and / or dietary supplements". said researchers---- Wolpowitz and Gilchrest , Boston University Of Medicine

CHOLECALEIFEROL, ERGOCALCIFEROL, IN THEORY----

vitamin D refers to two biologically inactive precursors - - D3, also known as Cholecalciferol, and D2, known as Ergocalciferol. The former is produced in the skin on exposure to UVB radiation (290 to 320 n m ) and can also be consumedfrom oily fish. The latter is derived from plants and only enters the body via the diet. Both D3 and D2 precursors are hydroxylated in the liver and kidneys to form 25- hydroxy vitamin D< the non-active "storage" form, , and 1,25 - dihydroxyvitamin D, the biologically active form that is tightly controlled by the body.

The above source is quoted from verbatim

NEW CONCEPTS IN MEICINE NOT COVERD IN THE MEDIA

Benign hypertrophy prostate, BHP, is not due to enlargement of the prostate as urologists claim The cause is Testosterone , thats the missing link, thats the exact statement from noted endocrinologist, Dr. Eugene Shippen. I am quoting an interview verbatim.

Dr.Shippen : Alot of the BHP ( Benign Prostate Hypertrophy) symptoms that we get are due to a loss of energy of the prostate muscles that open and close the doors and allow flow to be maximized. A lot of the BHP symptoms dont correlate at all with the size of the prostate. They correlate with testosterone. Once we make that link, men dont have to get up to urinate three times a night, there is a misconception among urologists that BHP is really due to enlargment of the prostate. Half of the men don't have an enlarged prostate, and the missing link is testosterone.

Interviewer : So as men lose their hormones, testosterone in this case, they lose their muscle tone not only outwardly, but internally as well ?

Dr. Shippens reply ----- Correct, bladder function, prostate function, sexual function, and tone in the muscles of the pelvis are all related to declining Testosterone levels and atrophy, they literally lose the athleticism of those muscles. (close quote )
The above interview I have noted verbatim, by Dr. Eugene Shippen U.S.A. leading endocrinologist, author and researcher, authority on Andropause.

HORMONES, BONES , CALCIUM, VITAMIN D, TETANY

PARATHYROID HORMONE DEFINED AS ------------------

Lying just above the thyroid are a variable number of bean- shapped glands known as the parathyroid, the primary function of the parathyroids is the maintenance of adequate levels of calcium in the extra cellular fluid. The most significant function of parathyroid hormone is mobilization of Calcium from bone, it reduces phosphate concentration, permitting more calcium to be mobilized. Hypoparathyroidism leads to manifestations of Hypocalcemia and Tetany, symptoms are muscle spasms, convulsions, gradual paralysis with dyspena &death from exhaustion prior to death gastrointestinal hemorrhages & hematemesis frequently occur.
The symptoms of tetany are relieved by administration of calcium salts. Calcium salts administered intravenously. Large doses of Vitamin Dare also useful to relieve tetany and restore the normal level of calcium in the blood.

The above is quoted verbatim from the textbook
Bergersen Pharmacology In Nursing Thirteenth Edition.

STRESS FRACTURES REDUCED BY VITAMIN D & CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION

Supplementing female military recruits with Vitamin D & calcium prevents stress fractures and debilitating overuse injuries. Sress fractures occur when bones are repetitively stressed over short periods of time without adequate time for repair, more common in women than men.
Researchers randomized 5,201 female Navy recurit volunteers to recieve 2,000 mg calcium and 800IU Vitamin D daily or placebo during eight weeks of basic training. During the treatment period,309 participants were diagnosed with stress fracture. Women who recieved calcium & Vitamin D had a 20% lower incidence of stress fracture than the placebo group.
Supplementing basic training recruits with Calcium & Vitamin D supplements may significantly reduce debility and financial costs releated to stress fractures.
Authors of study concluded------ Supplementation with Calcium & Vitamin D provides a safe, easy & inexpensive intervention that does not interfere with training goals".

VITAMIN D3, HORMONES,BONES ,AND ORGANS

The kidneys make a hormone called Calcitrol, a unique form of vitamin D. Vitamin D is in actuality not a vitamin but a type of steroidal hormone that is synthesized in a unique endocrine system in the body. During sunlight exposure the human skin converts a form of cholesterol to Vitamin D3 the liver alters or metabolizes this again (into 25- hydroxycholecalciferolaka 25-OHD3, then the kidneys use that altered substance to make two highly biologically active hormones. One of them Calcitriol, acts on the cells of the intestine to increase absorption of calcium from the diet and direct it to the bones for bone formation. Some of this calcium is also used to patch damaged blood vessels contributing to arteriosclerosis. Calcitriol also regulates certain parathyroid hormones that maintain the bodys level of phosphorus. The kidneys constantly monitor the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body and increase or decrease them as needed. Through calcitrol the kidneys regulate bone mineralization and maintain the transfer of calcium to the bones to make them stronger. They effect not only the bone marrow in the creation of red blood cells but also the bone itself. Low androgen levels in men also have an impact on kidney function.

LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS LINKED WITH DEPRESSION

Older people with low levels of Vitamin D and elevated levels of parathyroid, hormone (PTH, a hormone that regulates blood calcium levels) are more likely to be depressed than those with normal levels. This Dutch study, researchers measured levels of 25- hydroxyvitamin -D and PTH in 1,282 participants aged 65 to 95, of whom 26 were suffering from major depression and 169 from minor depression. They found 25-hydroxyavaitamin D to be 14% lower in depressed subjects ( average: 19 ng /ml.) In bth depressed and non- depressd participants, Vitamin D was far below optimal ranges of 50-60 ng/ml of 25 hydroxyvitamin D of blood indicative of how pervasive Vitamin D deficiencies have become.
Serum PTH levels were 33% higher in those with major depression compared with their non- depressed counterparts. Higher PTH can be caused by inadequate Vitamin D status.

The Peer Review Journal cited above is ------
Hoogendijk WJ, Lips P, Dik MG, Deeg Dj, Beekman AT, Pennix BW,
Depression is associated with Decreased 25-hydroxyvitamin D and Increased parathyroid hormone levels in older adults.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IS COMMON, EVEN IN SUNNY CLIMATE, IN USA

Individuals who live in sunny climates are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency, Researchers analyzed serum levels of 25- hydroxy vitaminD in 637 residents of southern Arizona, Vitamin D deficiency which was defined as 25-hydroxyvitamin D below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/ L) , was found in 25% of the residents. Many scientists now believe that optimal Serum levels of 25- hydroxyvitamin Dare within the range of 30-50 ng/ ML (75-125 nmol/ l. Deficiency of VitaminD in residents of a sunny region is a significant public health concern because, " Recent work has associated suboptimal concentration of circulating 25- hydroxyvitamin D with a number of diseases".

STUDY, VITAMIN D INSUFFICIENCY, BREAST CANCER

Study finds high incidence of Vitamin D- insufficiency in Women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Published article in the July 20008: issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, the National Cancer Institute, and other research centers report a high incidence of vitamin D insufficency among female breast Cancer survivors. Data obtained from 790 participants in the multi- ethnic Health, Eating, Activity, and Lifestyle (HEAL) study of breast cancer patients, which sought to determine the effect of diet, hormones and other factors on breast CANCER PROGNOSIS AND SURVIVAL.
Blood samples collected within three years following the participants breast cancer diagnosis were analyzed for Serum 25 - hydroxy vitamin D levels, the primary biomaarked used to evaluate Vitamin D status. Dietary questionnaires were used to obtain information concerning Vitamin D intake levels from foodand supplements. Few women were found to have levels of Vitamin D of at least 32 nanograms per milliliter, that are sufficent for optimal health. Deficient levels of Vitamin D were detected in 75.6 percent of the participants, Women who had been diagnosed with localized or regional breast cancer had lower Vitamin D levels than those with in situ ( noninvasive) disease only a quarter of the women reported using supplements. Authors note evidence suggests an asssociation between Vitamin D status and survival in breast cancer

Vitamin D therapy could be useful, cost effective treatment for breast cancer patients. The authors of this study write " Clinicians may want to consider testing their breast cancer patients for serum 25- hydroxy vitamin D and to offer appropriate recommendations, if necessary , to improve Vitamin D status".

TESTOSTERONE IS KEY THAT UNLOCKS PROSTATE DISEASE

High levels of Testosterone men had least Prostate enlargment. The Prostate is designed to recive an influx of tesoserone its no coincidence that prostate disease occurs in a mans life in his later years just when the the sex hormone levels of tesosterone are in decline.
As men age there is an increase of estrogen and a decrease of testosterone that equals disaster.
BHP and Prostate Cancer occur when a mans levels of Testosterone are low and in decline, Testoterone is the source of the problem of prostate suffering.

The American Foundation for Urologic Disease estimates that more than half of all men fifty and older have enlarged prostates. Symptoms of BPH (1) Decreased force of urination (2) trouble initiating urination (3) dribbling ( trouble shutting off the urine stream (4) painful urination and frequent need to urinate / (5) Need to urinate at nighttime ( nocturia)

# 12 ESTROGEN LEVELS IN A MANS BLOOD TEST NOTED

View Life Extension's Male Hormone Modulation Protocol www.lef.org/ male Hormones.

The role that estrogen plays in mens health is the subject of todays medical conferences testing ones estradiol level is critical , it can be a serious problem if its to high or if its to low. Scienists are debating what the optimal levels of estrogen should be in men, proper blood testing and awareness can only thwart further suffering in men.

2007 STUDT , OLDER MEN, BPH, ESTRADIOL, DHT RESULTS, CONTINUED

lIFE EXSTENSION MAGIZINE , editoral in 1994 spoke of estrogen's role in (BPH ) encouraged men to take nutrients and the drugs ARIMIDEX & AVADART that exhibit anti- estrogen and anti- DHT properties in the prostate gland, itself.
When Estrogen & DHT are lowered in the blood, Prostate cells can compensate by synthesizing them in the prostate gland . Men also use nutrients that have aromatase- inhibiting properties.

Serum sex steroid hormones and lowering urinary tract symptoms in THIRD NATIONAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION EXAMINATION SURVEY ( NHANES 3) UROLOGY. 2007 APR; 69 (4) : 708-13

THE 2007 STUDY OF OLDER MEN, BPH URINARY TRACT , ESTRADIOL & DHT RESULTS

2007 Study, Researchers evaluated the association of sex hormone levels in the blood with common BPH urinary tract symptoms.
260 men, 60 years of age and older, blood levels of Testosterone, ESTRADIOL and other sex hormones measured, 128 cases had 2 of four symptoms ( excessive urination at night, hesitancy, incomplete emptying, and weak stream ) the 132 men in control group had no urinary symptoms. Results showed that BHP suffers had statistically significnatly greater estradiol concentrations tan symptom free controls. BHP suffers had a higher levels of marker for a metabolite for dihydrotestosterone ( DHT another documented factor in the development of BHP ). Men with greater estradiol concentration had a 1. 78 times higher incidence of urinary tract symptoms. A greater incidence of urinary tract symtoms occured in men with the highest levels of dihydrotestosterone metabolite, wheras blood testosterone level showed no effect on urinary symptoms. Doctors quoted as saying this study----------

" In this cross - sectional study represenative of older U.S.A. men , circulating AAG , a metabolite of dihyrotestosterone, and Estradiol were associated with an increased risl of having lower urinary tract symptoms ". (endquote )

#11 ESTROGENS ROLE IN BPH CONTINUED

# 11

Estrogen stimulates proliferation of stromal cells in the prostate gland that cause the urinary discomforts. A 2008 study documents specific mechanism by which estradiol causes rapid proliferation of prostate stromal cells. Researchers concluded these findings support the hypothesis that estrogen plays a role in the pathogensis of BPH, a disease charaterized predominantly by stromal overgrowth.

THE PARADOX, ESTROGEN, PROSTATE CANCER

The carcinogenic effects of estrogen within the prostate gland. Excess estrogen can first damage DNA regulatory genes to cause cancer and then act as a prostate cancer suppressor.
In like manner excess estrogen damages prostate cell DNA to initate cancer, then acts as a temporary prostate cancer suppressor, THE PARADOX ESTROGEN SUPRESSES CANCER CELL PROPAGATION CAN ALSO CAUSE CANCER. LOOK AT TEST OF AGING MEN'S ESTRADIOL AND FREE TESTOSTERONE BLOOD LEVELS AS A POTENTIAL INDICATOR OF PROSTATE CANCER.
Aging men with low free testosterone and high estradiol often have prostate cancer. Based on these oobservations, many of these men will die from vascular disease possible cause by high Estrogen levels) before their prostate cancer is diagnosed. Men who suffered from estrogen overload early in life are expected to die sooner, and not live long enough to develop clinically diagnosed prostate cancer. LOOKING AT STATISTICAL STANDPOINT IT WOULD APPEAR THAT HIGHER ESTRADIOL LEVELS IN AGING MEN DO NOT RESULT IN GREATER INCIDENCES OF PROSTATE CANCER, SINCE MANY MEN WITH THE HIGHEST ESTROGEN LEVELS ARE NOT ALIVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY. THEY DIE OF HEART DISEASE PRIOR TO SLOW MOVING PROSTATE DISEASE

# 5 WHY THE EXCESS ESTRADIOL IN MEN ?

# 5 The reason men suffer from excess estradiol and deficient testosterone is their aging blood produce less testosterone while more of their beneficial testosterone is converted ( aromatized) into Estradiol. The Pathological result in altering the ratio of testosterone to estrogen, creating estrogen dominance. This imbalance of estrogen overload and testoterone insuffciency is an often overlooked cause of cardiovascular disease. Thank God, There are safe methods to block the aromatase enzyme in order to lower excess estrogen while boosting free testosterone levels.

#3 ESTRADIOL, CAROTID ARTERY, STROKE.

To evaluate the arterial system you must measure the inner and medial wall of the carotid artery using a ultrasound test. In a 2006 study published, blood levels of estradiol were measured in 313 men average age 58. Carotid artery intima- media thickness measured at baseline and then three years lateer. Men with higher levels of estradiol suffered a worsening thickening of their carotid artery wall. Researchers concluded " circulating estradiol is a predictor of progession of carotid artery intima - media thickness in middle age men">

This study of middle - aged men based on findings that treatment of men with Prostate Cancer using orally ingested estrogen drugs is associated with increased cardiovascular events and deaths. Ultrasound measurements of carotid artery wall provides an accurate prognostic indicator of arterial disease.
Findings of this study show progression of carotid artery intima - media thickness in men with higher estradiol levels. Greater Carotid artery intima- media thickness sharply correlates with increased risks of heart disease and stroke.

#2 STROKE ESTRADIOL AND OLDER MEN

In this research study blood levels of estradiol ( a potent estrogen) were measured in 2,197 men aged 71 to 93 years , men with the highest blood levels of estradiol had a 2.2 fold greater risk of stroke compared with those whose estradiol levels were lower. This research study is

Vitamin D and estrogen metabolism it turns estradiol into estrone, D3 diffuses its harmful effects. Vitamin D, which has been shown to have an effect on estrogen metabolism in a different way. It turns estradiol (a hormone) back into estrone, which is the weak estrogen. When that system is working, the body has the ability to regulate estrogen according to its needs, instead of being overdriven toward the more powerful estrogen, estradiol.

ACETYCHOLINE

The Vagus nerve, which controls the stomach, intestine, bladder, and heart. The vagus nerve transmits it's influence to the various organs through the action of a chemical intermediary, or messenger. The messenger is a simple chemical substance called ACETYLCHOLINE. The solanaceous alkaloids work by blocking the action of acetylcholine and thus are classed as Anticholinergic drugs. Acetylcholine is a chemical messenger released by the cholinergic nerves, such as the vagus nerve.

HORMONES, THE PITUITARY, PAGE 550, BERGERSEN.

The Pituitary is very important, it's effect in regulating the secretion of other hormones.
It is abiut the size of a pea.
The Pituitary and target glands have a negative feedback relationship.
The size of a pea located in the Sella turcia of the sphenoid bone. Consists of anterior lobe and posterior lobe, and smaller parts composed of secreting cells.
A tropic hormone from the pituitary stimulates the target gland to secret a hormone that inhibits further secretion of the tropic hormone by the pituitary.

When the serum concentration of the target gland hormone falls below a certain level, the Pituitary again secrets the tropic hormone until the target gland produces enough to inhibit the Pituitary secretion.

The Hypothalmic releasing factors, which cause the release or inhibition of the various hormones from the anterior Pituitary.
The action of extracts of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary Gland. How many hormones are secreted by the gland is unknown, but seven extracts, have been prepared in a relatively pure state, they have, definite specific action.

(1) Growth Factor influences development of body, promotes sketal, visceral, general growth of the body. giantism and dwarfism are connected with pathology of the Anterior Lobe of the Pituitary gland.
Growth hormone or Somatotropin has been obtained as a small crystalline protien, now its experimental, tends to increase the blood sugar and antagonize insulin.

(2) The Follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) The Ovarian follicle, brings a charateristic changes of ESTRUS MENSRATION in women. stimulates spermatogenesis in men.

(3) Luteinizing Hormone (LH) cause with others, ovulation and secretion of estrogen in females, In man, Spermatogenesis, androgen formation, growth of intersitial tissue.

(4) (TSH ) THYROTROPIC HORMONE, is necessary for normal development and function of the thyroid gland and in excess, known to produce Hyperthyroidism and increase the size of glands in lab animals.

(5) Lactogenic Factor , hormone produces the Corpus Luteum.

(6) THE ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC hormone (ACTH ) stimulates the cortex of the Adrenal gland.

(7) Melanocyte - Stimulating Hormone = Injected in men will darken the skin.

ENDOCRINE HORMONES, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT.

The Actions of Hormones -------------
The Hormones are natural chemical substances, that act after being secreted into the bloodstream from the ductless or endocrine glands.
Hormones have physiologic interrelationships. Hormones from various endocrine glands work in concert to obtain physiologic control of vital processes, their relationship is synergistic or antagonistic this allows for flexibility and control. Six major areas hormones play a crucial regulatory role: _______________________________________

(1) Control and coordination of the secretory motor activites of the digestive tract.

(2) Control of ENERGY PRODUCTION

(3) Control of coposition and volume of extracellular fluid.

(4) Adaptation, acclimatization and Immunity.

(5) Growth and Development.

(6). Reproduction and Lactation in women.

To maintain the internal environment ther must be control of hormone secretion, a hormone produces a physiologic effect. Increased hormonal secretions may be evoked in response to stimuli from the external environment: cessation of external stimuli terminates the internal secretion response.
Hormones are not "used up" in exerting their physiologic effects but must be inactivated or excreted if the internal environment is to be in dynamic equilibrium.

Note that the hypothalmus , it functions, effects behavior patterns, regulates the basic life functions of man ( control of water excretion, appetite, sleep - wake mechanisms, temperature, and blood pressure, has its relationships with other parts of the nervous system and endocrine system.

PROSTATE DEFINED AS -------------------------

It is a gland in men, which is located at the base of the bladder and surronds the uretha. The prostate produces fluid that forms part of semen. If the prostate becomes enlarged it may exert pressure on the urethra and cause urinary symptoms. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

The Thymus = Linked with aging process located under breast bone, helps Lymph nodes produce T-CELLS, defend the body against attack. The Pituitary regulated by the hypothalmus Effects the Thymus.
The Thymus protects the Pituitary. Deterioation of these 3 Glands leads to aging. All are affected by the action of Insulin.
Insulin impotence caused by the lack of Chromium.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

The hypothalmus is the master gland, but the Pineal Gland controls it.
Pineal located at the base of the brain near the hypothalmus produces melatonin. Melatonin lets the hypothalmus know when it must read its secretions comensate for light / day & night cycles .
Age slows nerve transmissions from hypothalmus to the pineal, Pineal begins to shrink.

AGE: THE CONTROL CENTER, HYPOTHALAMUS, PINEAL, THYMUS

HYPOTHALAMUS = A collection of cells in the brain both nerve cells and as an endocrine or hormone secreting, gland at the same time. Nerve cells communicate to other nerve cells, and endocrine glands communicate with various sites in the body by sending chemical messages thru the bloodstream.
The Hopothalmus is the link between the brain and the environment, both inside and outside the body. Anychange ocurring in the enviroment is detected by nerve cells then transmit the nature of change to the hypothalmus. Hypothalmus then evaluates the situtation and when necessary alerts the appropriate areas of the body. It regulates the body's hormones controls nerve function, such as tempture, hunger and blood pressure. The hypothalamus, the control center of the body, like a thermostate.
Simply put it is a area at the base of the brain that regulates bodily functions, such as body temperature, hunger and thirst.

ACETYLCHOLINE DEFINED AS -----------------------

Acetylcholine-- Is a chemical carrier of thought and memory, an excitatory neurotransmitter, essential for storage and recall of memory, responsible for concentration and focus, and plays significant role in muscular coordination. A deficit in this neurotransmitter is related to memory decline and reduced cognitive capacity.
Acetylcholine is not made from amino acids , its primary building block is choline.
The more choline you consume the more Acetylcholine you can produce.
Choline belongs to the B- family of vitamins, found in lecithin, and phosphatidyl choline.
Foods high in lecithin are , egg yolks, wheat germ, soybeans, organ meats, Acetylcholine declines In age.

HOW HORMONES WORK, ONE VIEW

A hormone will only act on a part of the body it fits, a hormone can be thought of as a "key", And its target site such as an organ, has specifically shaped "locks", on the cell wall, then the hormone will work, the endocrine glands get feedback from the body so they can adjust the hormone and keep them at the right levels.

COMMON CLASS OF DRUGS ACCELERATES MENTAL, PHYSICAL DECLINE IN ELDERLY.

Anticholinergic medications, which are commonly used for conditions like overactive bladder, motion sickness, and asthma, may hasten functional and cognitive decline in older adults, according to new research ( cited at bottom of this article) Anticholinergics selectively block receptors for acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter involved in motor function and memory. A study presented at the Academy of Neurology showed healthy older adults using anticholinergic medication experienced 1.5 times faster rate of Cognitive decline than subjects not using the medications. Medication used to treat bladder disorders were the most problematic.
A related presentation from the American Geriatric Society reported that older adults using anticholinergics demonstrated slower walking speed and were more likely to need help with daily living compared with people who did not take the drugs, Taking one moderately Anticholinergic Drug simulated an extra three to four years of age. (2)
This findings dovetail with a recent study showing that older adults who used medications for dementia and overactive bladder had a 50 % faster rate of functional decline compared with adults who only used medication for Dementia. (3).
While ANTICHOLINERGICS can be useful medicines, Physicians and patients should be aware that they can accelerate physical and cognition decline.

HOW TO PREDICT A STROKE

A physical exam is of minimal value strokes are caused by blocked blood vessels in the brain, (ischemic stroke) or by Ruptures in brains blood vessels ( hemorrhagic stroke ) symptoms are- sudden weakness or numbness to the face, arm, or leg usually on one side, loss of spech, trouble talking , or understanding speech , dimmnes or loss of vision ( especially in one eye ) unexplained dizziness , unsteadiness, frequent falls, or sudden severe headache.
High cholesterol is somewhat predicitive. An MRI tells you if someone is already having a stroke. The best predictor is a regular duplex carotid artery scanning and ankle brachial index,

DOPAMINE, PARKINSONS

Dopamine, a substance used by cells to transmit impulses ( NEURO TRANSMITTERS).
Dopamine is one of 3 major Neurotransmitters known as CATECHOLAMINES, which the body respond to stress and prepare it for the flight-or -fight response. Insufficent dopamine disturbs, The balance between dopamine and other neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine.
Without dopamine, the nerve cells cannot properly transmit messages, and this results in the loss of muscle function and coordination, Parkinsons either tremor predominant, or postural instability and gait disturbed (pigd Walking Disorders".

BRAIN ATTACKS- STROKE

If the blood flow to your brain is interrupted you can suffer a brain attack also known as a stroke. When blood fails to reach an area of your brain, brain cells die rapidly and set off a chain reaction that kills other brain cells. A stroke is a emergency medical situtation and can permanently impair your speech, movement and memory.
Research scientists think they have discovered the " REAL CULPRIT " behind strokes and it is a Amino acid called HOMOCYSTEINE.

LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS LINKED WITH DEPRESSION

A new study shows for the first time that older people with low levels of Vitamin D and elevated
Levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH, a hormone that regulates blood calcium levels) are more likely to be depressed than those with normal levels.

In this study, Dutch researchers measured levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D and PTH in 1,282 paricipants aged 65 to 69, of whom 26 were suffering from major depression and 169 from minor depression. They found 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels to be 14% lower in depressed subjects (average:19 (ml) than non depressed subjects( average:22 ng/ml).
In both depressed and non-depressed participants, Vitamin D was far below optimal ranges of 50-60 Ng/ml of 25- hydroxyvitamin D of blood, indicative of how pervasive Vitamin D deficiencies have become. Serum PTH levels were 33% higher in those with major depression compared with their nondepressed counterparts. Higher PTH can be caused by inadequate Vitamin D status.

Processes, including the immune system, metabolic function, cognitive performance (specifically, learning and memory), And more, this study shows the key role of sleep in preerving memories of an episodic and emotional nature. The Restorative role of sleep is often underestimated and this study reminds us of the importance of this nightly process".

BRAIN FOOD & FOLIC ACID-BRAIN NUTRIENT

In a recent issue of the Journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience, UCLA professor of Neurosurgey and Physiological Science Fernando Gomez-Pinilla summarized the latest findings concerning the effects of various foods on the brain. In an analysis of over 160 studies, omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA, and ALA ) emerged as significant dietary compounds to enhance learning and memory and prevent mental disorders. Another important brain nutrient is the B vitamin Folic Acid has been linked with depression and cognitive impairment and supplementation with the vitamin has been demonstrated to be helpful in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia.
Understanding the molecular basis of the effects of food on cognition will help us to determine how best to manipulate the diet in order to increase the resistance of neurons to insults and promote mental fitness." Dr. Gomez -Pinilla concluded.

HOMOCYSTEINE LINKED TO STROKE,STUDY

In another study of 500 Afro- American woman age 15 to 44, the increased risk of stroke because of HOMOCYSTEINE was similar to that of smoking a pack of cigaretts per day.
"We found that younger women who had the highest levels of Homocysteine had double the risk of stroke, compared to women with lower levels'', says Steven J. Kittner,MD M.P.H., Professor of
Neurology Medicine, Epidemiolgy, and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

HOW B-VITAMINS MAY PREVENT STROKE-STUDY

The head of stroke research at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, James F. Toole, says the real culprit behind stroke is HOMOCYSTEINE, not cholesterol. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the USA and is a major cause of disability. Whats more, stroke prevention may be as simple as taking three, B-VITAMINS involved with Homosystein's metabolism.
He is coordinating a large international clinical trial with 57 institutions in North America and Scotland. Since 1997, the VITAMIN INTERVENTION FOR STROKE PREVENTION (VISP) trial has involved 3,200 participants with high blood levels of HOMOCYSTEINE, who are being given high or low doses of Vitamin B-12,B-6 and Folic Acid

Omega-3 Deficiency- THE SCURVY OF OUR TIME

90% of Americans are omega-3 deficient.
Omga-3 fat is anti- inflammatory (reduces inflamation), whereas omgea-6 fat is pro-inflammatory(promotes inflamation) . The omega-6/ omega-3 ratio should be 1/1; however due to the decrease in omega-3 intake (especially cold water fish, flaxseed, walnuts, and increase in OMEGA-6 intake (especially corn oil, red meat, The OMEGA-6 , OMEGA-3 ratio in America is approximately 10/1 to 20/1.
Following the Mediterranean diet will provide ample amount of OMEGA-3 fat and decrease the amount of OMEGA-6 fat. OMEGA-3 supplements (FISH OIL) can be beneficial, especially if cold water fish consumption is limted.
Mediterranean Diet consists of whole grains, legumes, lean protien, fresh fruits and veges and olive oil.

The FOUR DISTINCT TYPES OF MEMORY

The primary neurotransmitter responsible for memory function is acetylcholine.
There are four distinct types of memory, each ruled by one of the major neurotransmitters.

WORKING MEMORY----- Invloves the ability to absorb info or stimuli and retain it, bringing together old and current data, if the brain is overloaded with the latter, it will dump older memories. Working is affected by the frontal lobes and the biochemical Dopamine.

IMMEDIATE MEMORY----- Which lasts 30 seconds before the thought becomes long- term memory, consists of auditory and visual memory, an indication of one's learning capabilities and basic alertness. Immediate memory governed by the parietal lobe and the biochemical ACETYLCHOLINE.

VERBAL MEMORY ------ Necessary to produce and understand sound, words, sentences, stories, verbal memory controlled by the temporal lobes, and the biochemical GABA.

VISUAL MEMORY------ The ability to absorb and retain information such as faces, colors, shapes, designs, surroundings, pictures, and symbols. People who can drive to a location after being there only once, have exellent visual memory. Visual memory assisted by the occipital lobes and the biochemical Serotonin.

ACETYLCHOLINE DEFINED AS -----------------------

A neurotransmitter released by stimulation of the Vagus nerve, which alters heart muscle contractions, it induces movement of other muscels as well. Acetylcholine induces movement by the locomotion of an impulse across a nerve that causes it to release neurotransmitter molecules onto the surface of the next cell. This causes a stimulation of that next cell. After this process has been completed, the ACETYLCHOLINE is then broken into ACETATE and CHOLINE.
These travel back to the first cell to be recycled ino acetylcholine and start the process over again. ACETYLCHOLINE is critical for an adequately functioning memory.
Major research is now looking for treatments for memory deficits, like those found in ALZHEIMERS. Any mental health issue that involves memory or lack thereof, directlly or indirectly relates to ACETYCHOLINE.

CLINICAL RESEARCH into the supplemnt ACETYL- L- CARNITINE, IMPROVES ASPECTS OF COGNITION FUNCTION AND MEMORY. RESEARCHERS have found this nutrient is a
PRECURSOR to the production of not only the Neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE, but has a role in the synthesis of Dopamine.

Sleep Disorders

Sleep is a central predictor of your overall health. Sleeping gives your brain a chance to resynchronize every night , so that your reenergizized the next day. Its your life : sleep and relaxation, behavior predict longevity. The nutrient tryptophan at dinner and bedtime is eg=ffective in inducing sleep. Niacin prolongs tryptophan's effect. Vitamin B-6, Pantothenic acid, B- complex increase dream recall and promote sleep. Inositol relaxes the Brain.

Niacin, Vitamin B-3

Niacin/ Nicotinic Acid) derived from Yeast, lean meat, defficient = Pellagro.
Niacin is cconverted in the body to Nicinamide. Pellagra a disturbance of the GI tract, skin and nervous system. In a milder form of deficiencey patients are nervous, irritable have indigestion, Diarrhea or constipation, and abnormal skin pigmentation.
Lean meats, poultry, fish are a good source of Niacin . Milk and Eggs are good sources of the precursor substance, tryptophan. Science can synthesize Niacin from the essential amino acid, tryptophan, diets low in both Niacin an d tryptophan are the most likely to produce clinical deficiency. All of the B-Complex must be used. Niacin lowers cholestrol and in psychiatric contexts to differentiate between psychoses of dietary an d non-dietary origin.
Side effects- flushing, GI upset, not to be used by those with peptic ulcers since nicotinic acid causes a release of histamine and stimulates hydrochloric acid secretion. Take with meals lowers side effects.

Hypoglycemia, Medline Plus article.

You have sugar in your blood. Your body needs glucose, a form of sugar to have enough energy. After you eat, your blood absorbs glucose. If you eat more than your body needs your muscles and liver store the extra. When your blood sugar begins to fall, a hormone tells your liver to release glucose, in most people, this rasies blood sugar. If it does not you have Hypoglycemia ,
And your blood sugar can be dangerously low. Signs include hunger, shkiness, dizzines confusion, difficulty speaking, feeling anxious or weak.
Hypoglycemia usally a side effect of diabetes medications. Eating or drinking something with carbohydrates can help.
You can have low blood sugar without diabetes--- Have DR, call lab to measure bloood glucose, insulin and other chemicals that play a part in the body's use of energy.

I Love Cateccholamines

Catecholamines- Dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, and serotonin are synthesized, stored, and metabolized in the brain. These substances do not easily penetrate the blood - brain barrier, but their precursors do.

Catecholamines, defined as--------------------------------

Catecholamine- Naturally occuring amine functioning as a neurotransmitter or hormone,
Including dopamine, noreinephrine, and epinephrine, all are derived from Tyrosine and have a
Catechol group with an attached amine group. Neurons in the brain, in the adrenal gland, some sympathetic nerve fibers produce different Catecholamines.
Catecholamines include adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine, with roles as hormones and as
Neurotransmitters.

Essential for storage and recall of memory, responsible for concentration and focus, and plays significant role in muscular coordination. A deficit in Acetylcholine is related to memory decline and reduced cognitive capacity.
Acetylcholine is not made from Amino Acids it’s primary building block is Choline.

Unregulated vitamin supplement prices plummet

Unlike regulated perscription drugs, the cost of dietary supplements has plummeted over the past three decades, for example, when coenzyme Q10 (coQ10) was first intoduced to Americas in 1983, a bottle containing 1,000 mg (100 10-mg capsules) retailed for $30.00 in 2008, the retail price of a bottle containing 5,000 (100 50- mg capsules) of a superior form of coQ10 (ubiquinol) is $58.00 based on milligram potencey alone, the cost in inflation adjusted dollars, for C0Q10 has come down by 83%. When SAMe, the price plummeted to where Life Extension member can obtain 8,000 mgn (20 400-mg Tabs) for only $21.00 thus SAMe now costs 77% less than when it was originally introduced. Perescription drug costs , on the other hand, have skyrocked at a rate that for exceeds inflation, the difference is that perscription drugs are heavily regulated, as opposed to dietary supplements that are sold under free market conditions

Efficacy of vitamins

Vitamins have great biochemical importance for they are essential for maintenance of normal metabolic function, growth and health. In latin vitamin means vital for life.
Vitamins are natural constitutents of foods, if you have a nutritional deficite, they (the vitamins) Will bring your body into homostasis. Vitamin deficency diseases such as scurvey, beri beri, prenicious anemia, and rickets are well doucumented in the medical literature.

Substances required for life in appropriate amounts are the four principals, (1) Protiens (2) Fats (3) Carbohydrates (4) Water. Oor principal micronutrients required in smaller amounts are vitamins, minerals, essential fats, essential amino acids all of these sustain life.
